City Nature Challenge 2025: Torino

City Nature Challenge (CNC) is a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition involving cities all around the world.

Born out of an initiative by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences, has grown into a worldwide event.

The 2025 edition will take place from April 25 to May 4.

The Regional Museum of Natural Sciences (MRSN) is committed to stewarding the 2025 edition on behalf of the city of Turin, involved in the event for the first time.

Activities will be carried out jointly by: MRSN, University of Turin, University of Eastern Piedmont, Lepidopterology Association–ALI; Piedmont Nature Association–ANP; Exodomus; Societas Herpetologica Italica–SHI; Italian Lichenology Society–S.L.I.; Piedmontese Group for Ornithological Studies–GPSO, Piedmont Po Protected Areas Management Authority, Agronomists and Foresters Association of Turin.

The aim is twofold: on the one hand to involve as many people as possible in data collection; on the other hand to identify as many species as possible in the designated area.

Therefore, cities are divided according to population and size.

Rankings are made on three parameters: number of observers, number of uploaded sightings, number of species.

Researchers and citizens team up to map urban biodiversity through photos or audios to be uploaded to iNaturalist.

Should you want to join our team, download the iNaturalist app or create an account on the website.

Shoot photos of living creatures or record audio of the sounds they make from April 25 to April 28 and upload by May 4!

Photos of people, cats and pet dogs are not admitted.

To be eligible for the challenge, photos/audio are to be made within the boundaries of the map below.

If you wish to discover first-hand how scientists monitor biodiversity, you can join our field event by signing up for any activity you are eager to do.

You will be guided by researchers and scientists throughout the urban parks of Turin.

Follow the challenge live by browsing the Project page on iNaturalist: any submission meeting the requirements will be posted there.

Browse our social channel for highlights and details.

You are welcome!
