Salvare gli animali
How many children, at some point, have dreamed of becoming veterinarians to “save animals”? Most of them eventually took different paths as they grew up, but not all: for example, Giulia Corsini, who through her work, studies, and passion, has experienced the very different environments in which veterinarians and researchers operate. She takes us on a journey through clinics and zoos, nature reserves and city parks, circuses, and farms.
Each environment presents different practical, ethical, and philosophical issues: if the American gray squirrel threatens the survival of the European red squirrel, what should be done? Can animal welfare be safeguarded even on a slaughter farm? Is the boom in pet ownership just a business that creates stressed cats and depressed dogs? And what would really happen if we closed all zoos and circuses? More broadly: are we sure that our common ideas about animals, whether domestic or wild, truly reflect reality?
By the end of this book, as rigorous as an essay and as personal as a memoir, we will discover that the childhood idea of a veterinarian wasn't entirely wrong: it's just about understanding that the relationship between humans and animals is much more complex than we thought, full of nuances and contradictions. But if we remain free from rigid thinking and prejudices, and if we are willing to question ourselves every time, with our actions and ideas, we can still try to Save the Animals.
