Archaeological and Biodiversity Museum of Canavese, Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery of Canavese
Overview
The Archaeological and Biodiversity Museum of Canavese portrays the history of the Upper Canavese area, from the first human settlement to the Middle Ages. It includes a natural history section.
The Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Canavese houses:
- a collection of paintings, caricatures and personal belongings by painter and journalist Carlin Bergoglio;
- a permanent collection of paintings and ceramics by artist and ceramist Mario Giani, aka Clizia.
The Museum and Art Gallery take up an area of approximately 1,200 square metres, at the second floor of the historic monumental building of the former Textile Factory in Cuorgné, built at the end of the 19th century in Liberty style.

Collections
Natural History Section
The section includes:
- a collection of bird specimens and other taxidermied animals;
- the Seren Bernardone ornithological collection, originated from a collection of 500 birds, representing the main species living in, or passing through, the Canavese countryside. It includes both extremely rare specimens and common birds, accurately taxidermied.
- exhibition on the biodiversity of alpine grasslands in the Western Alps, as a topic shared with the neighbouring Gran Paradiso National Park).
Archaeology Section
The section includes:
- a collection partly from the Boira Fusca cave, an archaeological park managed by the Museum.The Boira Fusca is a veritable compendium of Canavese archaeology, as one of the earliest prehistoric sites in Piedmont, dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic;
- Neolithic and Bronze Age material from a number of settlements in the Orco Stream area and, broadly speaking, in the Upper Canavese;
- models and dioramas depicting daily life situations of the populations that have inhabited the area over the centuries.
Art Section
The section includes:
- the donation to the Municipality of Cuorgnè of some 200 works by the artist Carlin Bergoglio, co-founder and director of the daily sports newspaper Tuttosport, from 1949 to 1959.
All works were created by applying a wide range of techniques.
They cover a variety of topics: everyday life scenes, still life, urban and rural views, nature landscapes, sports; - over 100 paintings and sculptures by artist and ceramist Mario Giani, aka Clizia, are displayed in the Gallery.
Library
The Museum's library has around 700 volumes on a variety of topics: nature, archaeology and art, among others.
Activities
The Museum provides:
- guided tours on request;
- guided tours and workshops for schoolchildren from primary to secondary school;
- educational workshops and role-plays for young people from 6 to 16 years of age;
- activities for adults when exhibitions are held;
- tours of the Boira Fusca archaeological park;
- annual thematic exhibitions, usually in collaboration with external organisations;
- scientific collaborations with: Gran Paradiso National Park and Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape.
The multimedia room is equipped with a large screen.
