Local culture and religious traditions

Overview

Local culture and religious traditions is a Visitor Center of the Gran Paradiso National Park.

Religious beliefs in Alpine culture shape daily life and mark key moments for both individuals and the community.

These beliefs have been expressed over time through simple and direct means, such as:

  • wayside shrines;
  • votive pillars;
  • frescoes;
  • legends;
  • folk beliefs;
  • prayers;
  • invocations;
  • patron saint festivals;
  • processions;
  • ex-votos;
  • specific devotions;
  • incantations;
  • blessings of objects, products of labour and domestic animals;
  • pilgrimages;
  • confraternities.

Popular devotion in the Park’s valleys is illustrated in the Visitor Centre through:

  • historical documents;
  • images;
  • historical records;
  • multimedia.

The Centre shares its premises with the complex of buildings adjacent to the Sanctuary of Prascondù.

The Sanctuary is a seventeenth-century building erected to commemorate a healing miracle believed to have been performed by the Virgin Mary.

It has since become a traditional pilgrimage destination.
