Mergozzo Archaeological Museum MU.ME.
Overview
The Mergozzo Archaeological Museum MU.ME. displays around one hundred of the approximately 1,300 finds of the Palaeontology Collection.
The exhibits were locally found in Sambughetto Caves, Strona Valley, Verbania province.
They are mostly Ursus spelaeus, the cave bear that lived in the Pleistocene and became extinct around 27,000 years ago.
A small number of fossils of other contemporary species complement them, such as the cave lion and the wolf.
Some of the exhibits are of archaeological relevance, as they bear traces of slaughtering made by humans using flint tools from the Palaeolithic period.
The other showcases display archaeological finds from the province of Verbania, dating back from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages.
The museum is a part of the Montorfano Granite Ecomuseum.
