The River House
Description
The River House is:
- a cross-border environmental education centre;
- the operational headquarters of the Gesso and Stura River Park.
It hosts educational programmes and training sessions, workshops and events to promote environmental awareness and conservation.
The building fits perfectly into the landscape. It is constructed using sustainable byilding method.
Energy self-sufficiency is achieved by:
- a photovoltaic system;
- horizontal geothermal heating;
- green roof insulation;
- large windows used as a solar greenhouse.
The House’s garden recreates the following river environments:
- natural lake;
- woodland;
- large lawns.
Facilities
Educational apiary
The apiary offers an educational opportunities to learn about the complex social structure of bees and pollinating insects.
The thoughtful building layout is designed to offer everal pathways to give students and visitors choices in how they move through the space.
The building's exterior resembles a beehive.
Inside, a space with two small halls is designed for educational and public-facing activities.
Bee activity inside the hives can be watched through:
- a glass window;
- a camera system with a screen that allows beekeepers to see a live feed.
Interactive exhibition Change – change the climate, change ourselves
This is a permanent exhibition at the River House.
The exhibition addresses the issue of climate change through digital and analogue interactions.
The content combines the perspectives of:
- climatologists;
- geologists;
- naturalists;
- science communicators;
- artists;
- activists.
The exhibition is intended for students and the general public to:
- raise awareness among visitors;
- promote proper behavioural practices.
It can be visited upon reservation.
Activities
The River House provides:
- educational activities for students of all levels and for youth summer camps;
- training programmes for teachers and educators;
- events promoting environmental awareness and engagement;
- educational-recreational workshops;
- temporary exhibitions;
- conferences, lectures, courses;
- transboundary partnership on environmental education and conservation projects in Italy and France, particularly in the Maritime Alps and Mercantour National Parks.
