Traditional and modern crafts

Overview

Traditional and modern crafts is a Visitor Center of the Gran Paradiso National Park.

It is housed inside the deconsecrated church of San Francesco, right on the main street of Locana.

An ancient Alpine domestic setting has been minutely reconstructed in one hall, depicting how fresh milk was turned into butter and cheese.

In the main hall, an animated diorama vividly conveys the harsh living conditions of the chimney sweeps.

Chimney sweeping was one of the itinerant trades carried out in winter by the men and, often, the children of the valley.

Chimney sweeps also have a documentary and an interactive sound installation dedicated to them.

The adjoining hall provides a description of how hydroelectric power is generated.

A detailed model illustrates a dam system and the operation of the hydroelectric power station in the Piantonetto valley.
