Why the Michele Lessona Award?

Michele Lessona, a distinguished figure of the 19th century, was a doctor, naturalist, politician, journalist, novelist, traveller, museum director, university professor, rector, city councillor of Turin, senator of the Kingdom and much more. He distinguished himself as a highly regarded lecturer and brilliant storyteller; populariser and translator of Charles Darwin's major works, he was described by many as the first Italian science communicator. The award aims to encourage reflection on the value of science in our lives: it is an integral part of our daily lives and influences many of our choices, which are relevant not only to us as human beings but also to the entire planet we inhabit. The theme chosen for the first edition is climate change, one of the greatest challenges for the future of humanity.
