Research on mangrove amphibians and reptiles in Nosy Be, Madagascar

Did you know the MRSN, Regional Museum of Natural Sciences of Turin, carries out research in Madagascar?

In the framework of a cooperation between the MRSN, the University of Calabria and the Italian Gekko Association (IGA), research was carried out on the mangrove ecosystem of the island of Nosy Be, north-west Madagascar.

Student Salvatore Rubino, coordinated by Professor Emilio Sperone of the University of Calabria and Franco Andreone of the MRSN, and student Nirina from the University of Mahajanga, collected data on the distribution of amphibian and reptile species in the fragile mangrove system.

To accomplish the task, they have walked transects at both night and daytime, according to a planned pattern, in order to identify and record the species of the area. In parallel, they also collected blood data to ascertain the incidence of parasites on some selected species. Such research will make it possible to assess the conservation status of the herpetofauna and to recommend conservation measures.
